I admit it, reluctantly…I was wrong.

Hawaii-five-o

To be fair, I was right a little. The first episode is a pile of doody (so is most of the first season if I’m being perfectly honest). It awkwardly stumbles through the first introductions of all the characters as most shows do but this is more unbearable than most. It does get better but I think that’s largely due to the cast and how they play off each other. They all have great chemistry together, I love the interaction between them all. The character development and the chemistry is what kept me watching, that and because I really wanted to watch the NCIS:LA cross over episodes with background knowledge. If it wasn’t for those cross over episodes I wouldn’t have bothered. At first I couldn’t see how they could do the cross over, as I hadn’t watched the orginal series (my knowledge goes as far as the theme song), but after the first season I realised it reminded so much of JAG. Steve McGarrett has a lot of Harmon Rabb in him..or rather the other way round if the orginal series was in similar tone.

My biggest gripe with the show is product placement. It is laughable how obvious it is. It’s Bones’ Prius ridiculous. The most obvious is the Windows love, they all have Windows based phones, which they always have extensive close ups of them using…constant talk of uploading files from and to Sky Drive…and of course my favourite Chin telling Kono to ‘Bing it’ the popular phrase said by no one around the world.

My second favourite annoying product placement was Subway it is literally an advert in the middle of an episode…I mean seriously…I wonder if they think they’re being subtle with the placements…

Product placement aside I think it’s a fun show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the character Danno helps to poke fun at Steve and in turn the show for us when it’s needed. If you only watch one episode then please make that the episode with James Caan. The storyline in that episode is middle of the road but the chance to see Scott Caan acting alongside his father James is not to be missed. It’s definitely one of the more humorous episodes.

Oh I almost forgot..they come up with calling their special team Five-O in private..suddenly in the next episode telling people they’re Five-0 (even before they’ve announced they’re law enforcement) is enough for people to just give themselves up! I suppose the gun in the face helps also..
